This is a practical and informative course to discuss and examine how we can interest and motivate learners of languages in the BGE.

Motivating reluctant learner of languages is proving to be more and more challenging; the aim of this course is to give ideas to teachers on different techniques which can help motivating learners.

  • In the first part of the course, we will look at resources, how to make resources more relevant therefore more interesting to all pupils. You will be given a list of different real-life websites (mainly in French and Spanish). We will then discuss how these websites can be used and adapted to the needs and levels of the pupils. Examples used in class will be given to you. Time will also be given for networking and sharing good practice and ideas.
  • The second part of the courses will be about cooperative and active teaching. A balance needs to be used in class between active teaching and more academic teaching. You will be given different cooperative teaching activities and also active activities which can be used in class to help building on the knowledge of the pupils but also their interest and motivation. Activities like the detective, snap, unfair quiz, steal the card, bob up, delayed dictation and more will be explained and practised in the course.

To finish, you will be given some help on how to incorporate digital technology within your teaching. You will be presenting different websites where pupils can revise their knowledge of languages while they are playing. This is proven to be a really good way to interest the most reluctant pupils by given them a wee sense of competition at the same time. We will look into the following websites/apps : classtools, plickers, kahoot, quizlet and gimkit.

At the end of this course you will be leaving with a concrete list of websites, some resources, a list of different techniques/activities used in class to make your teaching more active and interactive and some practice in incorporating digital learning in your teaching. And most importantly, you will be given time for networking and sharing good practice with your pairs.
